I can finally sleep at night…
There was a time where sleep became something I dreaded. Not because I didn't want to go to bed, but because I didn't know what the night was going to bring. Waking up at 2am, then 3am, lying there with my mind racing and that awful feeling in the middle of the night that everything felt bigger, heavier and harder than it really was. I remember thinking, why can't I just sleep? And the more it happened, the more frustrating it became. Because I was doing all the right things. But nothing seemed to work.
What I Realised About Sleep in Midlife
What I understand now is that sleep in midlife isn't just about being tired. It's influenced by hormonal changes, stress, blood sugar and your nervous system. Which means it's not always solved by simply going to bed earlier. It needs a little more support than that. And once I understood that, everything started to change.
What I Do Now (And What's Helped Me Most)
I won't say I get it perfect every night. But I can honestly say that I sleep well now and that's something I never thought I'd be able to say a few years ago. These are the things that made the biggest difference for me.
Stopping eating by 7pm was a big one. Eating later in the evening can disrupt blood sugar levels during the night, which leads to those frustrating early hour wake-ups. When your blood sugar drops, your body releases stress hormones like cortisol to bring it back up, and that's often what wakes you. By finishing eating earlier, my body has time to stabilise before I sleep, and the difference in staying asleep has been significant.
Magnesium glycinate taken in the evening has helped support relaxation and my nervous system. It's not a quick fix, but over time it's made a noticeable difference in how calm I feel before bed.
Bio-identical progesterone has been a meaningful part of my journey. Progesterone has a naturally calming effect on the body and can support better sleep. Taking it at night has helped me feel more settled and genuinely improved the quality of my rest. As always, this is personal to me and something worth exploring with the right support.
Sleeping in a separate bed to my husband was not an easy conversation to have but it was an important one. Between different sleep patterns, movement and being more sensitive to disruption, I realised I needed my own space to properly rest. And honestly, it made such a difference. Sometimes we don't realise how much small disturbances are affecting us until we remove them.
No phone after 9pm took real discipline. But scrolling before bed was keeping my mind active at exactly the moment it needed to be winding down. Now I switch off and give myself the space to properly relax.
Reading before bed replaced the phone scrolling entirely. Even just one chapter helps signal to my body that the day is coming to an end. It's become something I genuinely look forward to.
A consistent bedtime of between 10 and 10:30pm every night has helped regulate my body clock so I fall asleep more easily and wake up feeling more refreshed. That consistency matters more than I ever appreciated before.
It's Not About Perfection
I don't do all of this perfectly every single night. But having a routine that supports my body has made a huge difference. And I think that's the key. It's not about doing everything. It's about doing the right things consistently, and giving your body the conditions it needs to rest properly.
Sleep Changes Everything
When you sleep better, your mood improves, your energy increases, your resilience is stronger and everything simply feels more manageable. And when you've experienced disrupted sleep for a long time, you realise just how much it was affecting every single part of your life, not just the nights.
If You're Struggling Right Now
I know how frustrating it can feel. I know how long the nights can be. And I know how much it spills into everything else when you're not resting properly. But I also want you to know this. It can get better. Sometimes it just takes understanding what your body needs now, not what worked before.
If sleep is something you're currently navigating, I've put together a free sleep masterclass where I go into all of this in much more detail. I talk through what's happening in midlife, why sleep can feel so disrupted, and the simple things you can start doing to support your body. Because sometimes it's not about doing more. It's about understanding what your body actually needs.
You can access it here. And I hope it helps you start getting the rest you truly deserve.
