5 Things I Wish I Knew Before Perimenopause Hit

And no, just take HRT and chill is not one of them!!!

Let me say it loud and clear: there is nothing that prepares you for perimenopause. You think you've got a handle on your body, your mood, your energy. And then one day you wake up and it's like your hormones have packed a bag and gone on a silent retreat without telling you. No note. No warning. Just gone. I don't know if it was like that for you, but it absolutely was for me. So in true Midlife Mayhem fashion, here are five real, unfiltered truths I genuinely wish someone had warned me about before perimenopause rocked up with a suitcase full of surprises.

1. Fatigue Isn't Just Tired. It's a Whole Personality Shift.

This isn't your standard didn't sleep great kind of tired. This is a deep, bone-soaked exhaustion that makes brushing your teeth feel like a task that requires a lie down afterwards. I kept thinking, what is wrong with me? Am I just lazy now? And the answer is no. It's hormones and sleep disruption and stress and the sheer mental load of carrying everything all at once. If I could go back I would tell myself to stop blaming yourself, stop trying to push harder, and start working with your energy instead of against it. And for the love of God, just take a nap when you need one.

2. Your Body Is Going to Feel Like a Stranger for a While.

The belly fat shows up uninvited. Your joints start creaking in ways that feel very unfair. You cry at something completely random and then immediately go and rage clean the kitchen. I wish I'd known sooner that this wasn't about me letting myself go. It was biology doing what biology does. And I wish I'd shown my body so much more grace instead of trying to punish it back into being what it was in my twenties and thirties. Now I move to feel strong. I lift weights to build my bones. I rest, I nourish, and I don't obsess over the scales. How I feel in my own skin is what matters.

3. You're Going to Feel Like You're Losing Your Mind. You're Not.

Hello, brain fog. Forgetting why you walked into a room. Standing in a supermarket car park with absolutely no idea where you parked. Blanking on your PIN number mid-transaction. I genuinely thought I was heading for early onset dementia. It turns out that oestrogen, the hormone we never appreciated nearly enough, is taking its leave. And your brain is trying to recalibrate without it. You are not broken. You are not stupid. You are not past it. Your brain just needs some support right now, and it will find its feet again. I promise.

4. You Have to Learn How to Process Stress. Properly.

The old me would just push through. Suck it up. Get on with it. The new me goes for a walk with the dogs, does a short stretch, or spends five minutes actually breathing. Perimenopause will force you to slow down whether you want to or not, because cortisol becomes your number one enemy when it goes unchecked. Stress literally sticks to your belly and wrecks your sleep, and willpower alone is no match for it. I found meditation helped. Breathwork helped. Genuinely throwing myself into a combat workout and punching the air helped enormously. But most of all it was choosing a little peace over pressure, again and again, that made the real difference.

5. You Need a Midlife Toolkit. Not Just Willpower.

Willpower alone does not cut it when your hormones are hijacking your mood, your cravings and your motivation. What you actually need is a community of women who get it, a plan that fits your life rather than overwhelms it, workouts you don't dread, food that genuinely fuels you, and a few daily non-negotiables that anchor you when everything else feels like chaos. That's exactly what we've built inside Midlife Mayhem. The fitness, the education, the community, all in one place designed specifically for this season of life. I wish I'd stopped trying to be strong on my own so much sooner, because resilience doesn't come from solo suffering. It comes from support, strategy and the right people around you.

If you're in the thick of it right now, I see you. You are not imagining it, you are not alone, and you are absolutely not failing. This phase will strip things away, your energy, your patience, your certainty. But it also gives you something back. A clarity that is genuinely powerful. A this is my life and I'm living it on my terms kind of energy that, honestly, I find completely liberating.

Go drink some water. Move your body. Say no to something you don't want to do today. And remind yourself that you are doing so much better than you think.

I am here for you every step of the way.

Love,

Cara xx
