Finding Your Fire: Midlife Motivation When You Just Can't Be Arsed.
I'll be honest with you. I woke up this morning and had to drag myself out of bed. I had an internal argument with myself about getting up, which I lost approximately three times before I finally did it. And I know I'm not the only one. That little voice that says just five more minutes, just today, just this once. The thing is, that internal argument is exactly what prompted me to write this. Because the question I get asked more than anything else, more than what to eat, more than which workouts to do, is this: Cara, how do you stay motivated?
So let me be really honest with you about that.
Motivation Is Not Coming to Save You
The midlife motivation slump is real. One day you're charging through life and the next you're wondering where on earth your energy went. And I spent years, genuinely years, waiting to feel motivated before doing anything. Waiting for that magical feeling to arrive so I could get started. It was such a waste of precious time. Because here's the truth that changed everything for me: action comes first. Motivation follows. Not the other way around.
Motivation is not a magical unicorn that appears while you're in your pyjamas watching Netflix. It's more like a muscle. Use it regularly or it turns to mush. So instead of waiting to feel ready, put your workout clothes on. Roll out your mat. Step outside for a five minute walk. The motivation will catch up with you, I promise. Last week I felt completely rubbish and forced myself to just start my fifteen minute workout anyway. Afterwards I was on a high and genuinely baffled by the fuss I'd made about it in my head. It's the same pattern every single time.
Find Your Non-Negotiables
We are all busy women with a million things to juggle, and most of us are juggling everyone else's things as well as our own. But here's the truth. If you don't put yourself at the top of your priority list, nobody else is going to do it for you. You need to find your non-negotiables. The things you commit to no matter what chaos is unfolding around you.
For me it's a fifteen minute workout on weekday mornings, drinking enough water throughout the day, getting to bed by 10:30 most nights, and moving after dinner even if that just means tidying up the kitchen. None of these are massive commitments. But they are the foundation that keeps me from completely losing the plot. My husband Larry knows that Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings are non-negotiable workout time, and he manages whatever domestic crisis arises while I'm doing it. Find what yours are. They don't have to be many. Just a few small anchors that ground you when everything else feels like chaos.
Stop Overthinking. Yes, I Know.
I say this as the world's worst overthinker. I lie awake going through tomorrow's to-do list in my head. I analyse, I plan, I worry about things that never actually happen. And it gets worse in midlife, because we often become more cautious than we once were. But imperfect action beats perfect inaction every single time. So put down the pros and cons list and just move your body. Even if it's not the perfect routine. Even if it's only ten minutes. Just start.
Schedule yourself into your calendar like you're a very important person. Because you are. You wouldn't cancel a doctor's appointment or miss something at your grandchild's school. So why is it so easy to cancel on yourself? Block the time. Set the reminder. Show up for yourself with no last minute excuses. You are the most important appointment of your day.
Find Your Real Why
Surface level motivations get you started but they don't keep you going on the hard days. Wanting to fit into your jeans or look better in your clothes might light a spark, but it won't sustain you. I want you to dig much deeper than that.
My real why completely changed when I hit 45. It used to be about how I look. Now it's about how I feel and what I'm capable of doing. I want to be strong enough to live a long, happy, independent life. I want my daughter to see me choosing myself, not hating on myself. I want to be there for my grandchildren one day with energy to spare. Find your real why. The one that will carry you through on the days when the sofa is winning and the biscuits are calling louder than the nourishing food you know you should be eating. That why is what keeps the fire going.
Self-Care Is Not Selfish. Say It Again.
I need to say this a little louder. Self-care is not selfish. You are the glue that holds so much together. Your family, your work, your community, they all benefit from your strength and your energy. But you cannot pour from an empty cup. Every time you prioritise your own wellbeing you are actually saying yes to showing up for everyone else in a more sustainable way. You're saying yes to being present, energetic and not a completely exhausted, resentful version of yourself. I learned this the very hard way after a full burnout about three years ago. I was everyone's everything and ended up being nothing to myself. Never again.
Stop Being Mean to Yourself
The path to anything worth achieving is never a straight line. It's more like a drunken walk home after a night out with the girls. We've all been there. You are going to have days when you don't move, when the sofa wins, when you eat toast for dinner because you're absolutely shattered. That does not mean you've failed. It means you're human. Last week I missed a workout and ate toast for dinner. The old me would have spiralled into I've ruined everything. The new me just got back on with it the next day. Because that's all it takes. The difference between people who reach their goals and those who don't isn't perfection. It's persistence. It's consistency. It's getting back up without beating yourself up. Speak to yourself the way you'd speak to your closest, dearest friend.
Your Fire Is Yours to Tend
Your midlife journey isn't about dimming your light or stepping into the background. It's about finding your fire again, the one that might burn a little differently now than it did in your twenties and thirties, but can burn so much more meaningfully. You have wisdom. You have experience. You have the hard-won perspective to know what actually matters and a very healthy intolerance for anything that doesn't. Those are the premium fuels right there.
Tend your flame with care. Protect it from the winds of self-doubt and the weight of other people's expectations. And let it warm you first before you worry about lighting up the room for everyone else.
If you're struggling to find that first step, that is exactly what the Midlife Mayhem community is here for.
